Critique de Breathe de Prodigy 1997 - So you wanna be a Rock n'Roll critic ? part 3

Suite du rangement de papier, le début et la fin de ma carrière de critique musicale paru dans Rock & Folk de Mars 1997. Le courrier s'appelle "Boue". Un peu embarrassant tout de même...

Sorry dear English readers (who do not exist) this comes in French.

Ian MacKaye '99 Interview by myself - So you wanna be a Rock n'Roll critic ? part 1

Hi there, it's been a while I didn't post anything here. This comes from an old paper sorting at my parent's. Back in '99 I planned to edit a punk rock fanzine and interviewed some hardcore & punk bands by email. I never published anything from that, I don't even think I spoke to anybody about that before ! The most interesting paper was Ian McKaye speaking about Straight-Edge. If you don't know who he is, go learn something on wikipedia, if you know, you understand why I am still proud of this shit : I talked to the Man dudes !

This is the original email Ian McKaye sent to me, Ian writes in UPPERCASE.

HELLO. SORRY TO TAKE SO LONG TO GET THESE ANSWERS TO YOU. TAKE
CARE.
>1.How did you get involved in straight edge, who created this concept and >what was the original idea?
l DIDN'T GET INVOLVED WITH STRAIGHT EDGE, I COINED THE PHRASE WHEN I
WROTE THE SONG 'STRAIGHT EDGE' BACK IN 1980. I WAS SINGING FOR THE BAND
MINOR THREAT, AND THE SONG WAS ABOUT AN INDIVIDUAL'S RIGHT TO LIVE LIFE THE
WAY they WANTED TO. AT THAT TIME MOST OF MY FRIENDS WERE GETTING HIGH. I
DIDNT DRINK OR SMOKE, AND WAS GIVEN A LOT OF GRIEF ABOUT IT FROM PEOPLE
WHO DlD SO l WROTE A SONG ABOUT MY FRUSTRATION WITH THESE PEOPLE. LATER,
SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO HAD HEARD THE SONG TURNED IT INTO A MOVEMENT OF
REGIMENTED BEHAVIOR. THIS IS BASICALLY THE ANTITHESIS OF WHAT I HAD IN MIND.
HOWEVER, I WASN'T TRYING TO START A MOVEMENT, SO IT'S NOT MY PLACE TO CORRECT
ANYBODY ABOUT IT.
>2.What do you think of SXE today'll these metal stub and this fat >crosses on the hand?
I DON'T REALLY KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT IT TO COMMENT ABOUT IT. I DON'T LISTEN TO ANY OF THE BANDS, AND DON'T FOLLOW THE IDEOLOGY OF THE VARIOUS BRANCHES OF THE 'MOVEMENT'.
>3.Are you still SXE today? l AM STILL STRAIGHT, BUT HAVE NEVER CONSIDERED MYSELF 'SXE'.
>4.Why did Minor Threat broke up?
WE WERE NOT GETTING ALONG, AND WE COULDN'TAGREE ON A MUSICAL DIRECTION.
>5.Looking back to those years, what do they mean to you?
LIKE ALL OTHER YEARS BEFORE THIS MOMENT, I COULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN HERE WITHOUT THEM.
>6.How do you see the evolution of your music from MT to the latest Fugazi?
ORGANIC. l HOPE THAT THE MUSIC HAS FOLLOWED A NATURAL PROGRESSION.
>7.Do you have any regret ? NO.
>8.something more to add? NOPE.
THANKS FOR THE QUESTIONS.

Home taping is killing the record industry profits !

28 ans que ça dure cette histoire... mais à l'époque certains avaient de l'humour.

Stop this war

Operation Ivy - Unity

Theres a war going down between my brothers tonight
I dont want no war going down, going down tonight
Stop this war
Civilization ha I call it as I see it
I call it bullshit you know I still cannot believe it
Our evolution now has gone the way of hate
A world evolved resolved into this stupid fate
Stop this war
All so different yeah I say were all the same
All caught you know in the division game
Self destruction fast impending like a bullet
No one can stop it once its fired no one can control it
Stop this war
A final word, wait it's not a call to action
We aint no sect, no this aint no fucking faction
Unity unity unity you've heard it all before
This time its not exclusive we want to stop a war
Stop this war

Ain't nothin wrong, with another unity song
Ain't nothin wrong
With a unity song!
Stop this war
Unity as one stand together
Unity evolutions gonna come

[ZIC] Weezer - Songs from the Black Hole - mp3

This may be one of the saddest record story. Just after the Blue Album, Weezer planned to release an indie-space-opera-rock. The project is known as "Songs from the Black Hole". The songs are so good, this coulda/shoulda been one of the better LP of the 90's. Unfortunately the project has been abandoned for obscure reasons and the fucking good songs ended up as separate tracks on Pinkerton, B-Sides and on Rivers' solo demo album. But most of the material is still unreleased and the project seems to be completely buried.

But he good news is that Kyle K made a great job and put together all the available songs, including some fan covers of unrecorded songs, edited that to make this cool to listen to, and now you can ear this marvel. If yu're an indie rock fan and never heard this, this is gonna blow your head ! This will not change the world but this might well contribute to.

Finally, here are the Songs from the Black Hole :

[ZIC] The Breeders - Alt. Splash (another way to listen to Last Splash) - mp3

This is kindda useless but I have been listening to this record for 14 years so I wanted to find a fresh way to get into it. The Breeders released many demo and alternative versions of the Last Splash songs, so this is more or less the original LP tracklisting (minus Mad Lucas and Roi (Reprise)) in demo, live, radio, single... version. If you are familiar with the original this works pretty well. Anyway, this is a killer record that would work pretty well even if it would be re-recorded in a eurodance version.

So enjoy it and tell me what you think.

-> Direct Download (new version with the full tracklisting) <-

Tracklisting :
1. New Year (Demo - Saints EP)
2. Grunggae (Demo - Saints EP)
3. Invisible Man (Demo - 4AD Presents The 13 Year Itch)

5. Roi (Live - Live in Stockholm)
